What Are Sorbents?

Sorbents are solid or liquid materials capable of absorbing (absorption) or bonding on their surface (adsorption) other substances, such as oils, chemicals, water, or gases. In the industrial and workshop context, sorbents play a key role in managing leaks and spills, helping to maintain cleanliness, safety, and environmental protection.

Definition of Sorbent and Its Role

The main role of sorbents is the quick and effective removal of unwanted substances from surfaces or their containment to prevent:

  • Environmental contamination: The penetration of harmful substances into the soil, groundwater, or sewage.
  • Safety hazards: Slipping on spilled oil, fire risk in the case of flammable substances.
  • Pollution of production processes: Contamination of products or machinery.
  • Material losses.

Sorbents work by absorbing liquids into their structure (like a sponge) or by attracting and retaining molecules on their surface.

Types of Sorbents

There are many types of sorbents that can be classified based on their form, the material they are made of, and the type of substances they are designed for:

Based on the form:

  • Loose sorbents (granules, powders): Easy to spread on irregular surfaces, effectively fill gaps. Examples: diatomaceous earth, sand, special synthetic granulates.
  • Absorbent mats: Flat sheets of varying thickness and absorbency, ideal for wiping surfaces, placing under machines.
  • Absorbent socks (booms): Long, flexible “sausages” filled with absorbent material, used to limit the spread of the spill and its absorption.
  • Absorbent pillows: Used for absorbing larger amounts of liquid in difficult-to-reach places or in containment pans.
  • Absorbent rolls: Long strips of mat rolled up, allowing coverage of large areas or cutting to size.

Based on the type of absorbed substance:

  • Hydrophobic sorbents (oil-only): Absorb oils, fuels, and other petroleum-based substances while repelling water. Ideal for removing oil contamination from the surface of water.
  • Universal sorbents (hydrophilic): Absorb both water and oils, coolants, solvents, and most non-aggressive chemicals.
  • Chemical sorbents (for aggressive chemicals): Specifically designed to absorb corrosive substances, acids, bases, and other aggressive chemicals. Usually made from chemically inert materials.

Based on the material:

  • Natural organic: E.g., sawdust, peat, cellulose (have limitations such as flammability).
  • Natural inorganic: E.g., diatomaceous earth, clays, vermiculite.
  • Synthetic: E.g., polypropylene, polyurethane (often the most efficient and specialized).

Criteria for Choosing the Right Sorbent

The selection of a sorbent depends on several factors:

  • Type of spill: What substance has been spilled (oil, water, chemicals)?
  • Size of the spill: How large is the stain, and how much liquid needs to be collected?
  • Location of the spill: Is it a solid surface, water, a hard-to-reach place?
  • Safety requirements: Is the substance flammable, toxic, corrosive?

Practical Tips for Using Sorbents

  1. Limit the spill: If possible, stop the source of the leak and use absorbent socks to prevent further spread of the stain.
  2. Apply sorbent: Spread loose sorbent or lay down mats/pillows on the spilled substance.
  3. Allow time for absorption: Give the sorbent time to absorb the liquid (according to the manufacturer’s instructions).
  4. Collect used sorbent: Use appropriate tools (brush, dustpan) while remembering Personal Protective Equipment.
  5. Clean the surface: If necessary, further clean the spill area.

Handling Used Sorbents

Used sorbent that has absorbed a hazardous substance (e.g., oil, chemicals) itself becomes hazardous waste. It should be collected in a properly marked, sealed container and handed over for disposal to a specialist company, in accordance with applicable regulations. Used sorbents with oils or chemicals should not be discarded in regular municipal waste.

Having appropriate sorbents in the workplace (workshop, warehouse, production hall) is a crucial element of preparedness for accidents and spills.
