The use of appropriate PPE is crucial when working with lubricants, operating fluids, and other chemicals.

Definition of PPE and Their Purpose

The purpose of using Personal Protective Equipment is to minimize the risk of contact with hazardous substances, protect against mechanical, thermal, or other dangers present in the work environment or during specific tasks. PPE should be used when hazards cannot be eliminated or sufficiently reduced through collective protective measures (e.g., ventilation) or through proper work organization.

Types of PPE Recommended When Working with Lubricants

Depending on the type of product, working conditions, and potential hazards, the following PPE are recommended when working with lubricants and operating fluids:

• Hand Protection:
  • Protective Gloves: The most important element. They should be resistant to the chemicals they come into contact with (e.g., oil-resistant, nitrile, neoprene). The choice of material depends on the type of substance (information in the Safety Data Sheet).
• Eye and Face Protection:
  • Safety Glasses: Protect against splashes and liquid sprays.
  • Goggles: Provide tighter protection, especially when there is a risk of substances entering the eyes from the side or above.
  • Face Shields: Protect the entire face from splashes or shavings.
• Skin Protection (other than hands):
  • Workwear / Protective Overalls: Protect skin and clothing from contamination and chemical contact. They can be made of materials resistant to penetration.
• Respiratory Protection:
  • Masks / Half-Masks with Appropriate Filters or Absorbers: Necessary when there is a risk of inhaling harmful vapors, oil mists, or dust. The type of filter/absorber must be matched to the type of substance (information in the Safety Data Sheet).
• Foot Protection:
  • Protective Footwear: Slip-resistant, oil-resistant, often with reinforced toes (protecting against mechanical injuries).

This section specifies exposure control measures and provides detailed guidelines on selecting appropriate PPE. A risk assessment for the specific workplace should also be considered.

Rules for Proper Use, Storage, and Maintenance of PPE

To ensure PPE effectively protects, they must be:

• Properly selected for the type of hazard and user (size, fit).
• Used as intended and according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Regularly checked for damage (cracks, wear, leaks). Damaged PPE should be replaced immediately.
• Kept clean and stored in appropriate conditions (protected from contamination, damage, moisture, UV radiation).
• Properly maintained (if applicable).

When Is PPE Mandatory?

In the work environment, the obligation to provide and use PPE arises from labor law regulations and occupational risk assessments. Employers are required to provide employees with appropriate PPE, and employees are required to use them.

In the case of private use, the application of PPE is a matter of conscious care for one’s own health and safety. It is always advisable to familiarize oneself with the recommendations on the product label (CLP) and in the Safety Data Sheet.

Remember that even if a product is not classified as hazardous, prolonged contact, for example, with oil, can lead to skin dryness and irritation. Therefore, using basic protective measures, such as gloves, is always a good practice.
