  • Hygroscopicity: Many types of PAG oils tend to absorb moisture from the environment. This is an important feature to consider during their storage and use.
  • Specific (im)miscibility:
    • Some PAGs are water-soluble, others are not.
    • They are generally not miscible with mineral oils and most other synthetic oils (e.g., PAO, esters). Mixing attempts can result in phase separation, precipitation, or other issues.
  • Compatibility with materials: They can be aggressive towards some types of paints, seals, and plastics. Always check compatibility before use.

  • Refrigeration compressors: As oils for compressors using some refrigerants (e.g., R-134a in automotive air conditioning, ammonia (R-717), CO2 (R-744)).
  • Industrial gearboxes: Particularly in worm gears and others operating under heavy loads and high temperatures.
  • Brake fluids: They are a primary component of most brake fluids (DOT 3, 4, 5.1).
  • Fire-resistant hydraulic fluids: HFC type (glycol-water mixtures).
  • Specialty greases: For high temperatures, for the food industry (some types of PAG are approved for food contact).
  • Metalworking: As components of some cutting fluids.
  • Textiles and fibers: As lubricants and antistatic agents.

  • Compatibility: Always ensure PAG oil compatibility with the machine’s construction materials (seals, hoses, paints).
  • Miscibility: Avoid mixing PAG oils with other oil types unless explicitly allowed by the manufacturer. When switching to PAG oil, the system should be thoroughly cleaned.
  • Hygroscopicity: Store in tightly closed containers, minimize contact with humid air. Use open packages as soon as possible.
