Full Name and Expansion of the NSF H1 Acronym
NSF H1 is a registration category awarded by NSF International (formerly National Sanitation Foundation) for lubricants that are allowed to be used in equipment and machines of the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, where there is a possibility of incidental (accidental) contact of the lubricant with food or product. NSF H1 registration is a globally recognized standard confirming that a given lubricant meets strict requirements regarding composition and safety.
Definition of NSF H1 Registration
NSF International is an independent, global organization that engages in testing, inspection, and certification of products to protect public health and the environment. The NSF lubricant registration program is based on historic USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) guidelines.
The H1 registration signifies that the lubricant:
- Is intended for use in locations where incidental contact with food may occur.
- Its ingredients must comply with the list of substances approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) as per regulation 21 CFR §178.3570.
- Must be odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic in case of incidental contact in small amounts.
Meaning of “Incidental Contact with Food”
The term “incidental contact with food” means that the lubricant is not intended to be directly added to food nor should it be a constant ingredient of it. However, in production processes, there is a risk that small amounts of the lubricant (e.g., from bearings, guides, packaging machine chains, or food processing machines) might accidentally get into the product. H1 lubricants are formulated in such a way that in such situations they do not pose a risk to consumer health, provided that the amount does not exceed 10 ppm (parts per million).
Requirements for NSF H1 Lubricants
To obtain NSF H1 registration, a lubricant must:
- Be manufactured solely from approved substances (so-called “white list”), which are recognized as safe.
- Meet specified standards regarding purity and quality.
- Be appropriately labeled.
- The manufacturer must have systems ensuring consistent quality and traceability of the product.
Applications of NSF H1 Lubricants
Lubricants with NSF H1 registration are essential in many industries where hygiene and product safety are priorities:
- Food Industry: Processing of meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables, bakery, dairy production, confectionery.
- Beverage Industry: Bottling of water, juices, soft drinks, breweries.
- Pharmaceutical Industry: Production of medicines, dietary supplements.
- Cosmetic Industry: Production of cosmetics and personal hygiene products.
- Production of Food Packaging.
They are used for lubricating, among others, bearings, gears, chains, guides, pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders in machines that may potentially contact the product.
Storage and Usage Rules for NSF H1 Products
To ensure safety and avoid cross-contamination:
- NSF H1 lubricants should be stored separately from other conventional lubricants (non-food grade).
- Ideally, they should be stored in a dedicated, closed room or cabinet, clearly marked.
- Dedicated tools should be used for application (grease guns, oilers) to avoid mixing with other products.
- Personnel should be trained in the correct use and handling of H1 lubricants.
Other NSF Registration Categories
Besides H1, NSF distinguishes other categories of lubricants:
- NSF H2: Lubricants for use in the food industry, but in places where there is no possibility of contact with food. Composition requirements are less stringent than for H1, but they still cannot contain, for example, heavy metals or carcinogenic substances.
- NSF H3 (or 3H): Soluble or edible lubricants used as anti-sticking agents on grills, cutting knives, etc., where there is direct contact with food.
- NSF HT1: Heat transfer fluids for use in closed circuits where incidental contact with food is possible.
The use of lubricants with the appropriate NSF registration is crucial for ensuring food safety and compliance with quality management systems such as HACCP.
