What is flash point?

Flash point (Polish: temperatura zapłonu) is one of the key physicochemical parameters defining the flammability properties of liquids. It is the lowest temperature to which a liquid must be heated in standardized conditions to emit vapors above its surface in such a quantity that, when exposed to an external ignition source (e.g. flame), it will ignite briefly and then extinguish.

Definition and significance

Flash point is a measure of a liquid’s flammability. The lower the flash point, the more flammable the liquid is and poses greater fire risk at lower ambient temperatures. The vapor ignites only momentarily because at this temperature the liquid does not yet evaporate intensely enough to sustain burning.

Difference between flash point, fire point, and autoignition temperature

The flash point should be distinguished from other similar concepts:

  • Fire point (Polish: temperatura palenia): This is the lowest temperature at which the vapor of a liquid, after ignition from an external source of fire, continues to burn for at least 5 seconds. The fire point is always slightly higher than the flash point.
  • Autoignition temperature (Polish: temperatura samozapłonu): This is the lowest temperature at which a liquid (or its vapors mixed with air) spontaneously ignites without contact with an external ignition source (flame, spark). This is the result of the substance being heated to sufficiently high temperatures.

Methods of determining flash point

The flash point is determined using standardized laboratory methods involving special apparatuses. The most commonly used methods are:

  • Open cup method (e.g., Cleveland Open Cup – COC): The liquid sample is heated in an open cup, with a flame periodically passing over its surface. It is primarily used for substances with higher flash points, such as lubricating oils.
  • Closed cup method (e.g., Pensky-Martens Closed Cup – PMCC, Abel, Tag): The sample is heated in a closed cup, allowing for better accumulation of vapors. This method usually provides lower (and safer from a risk assessment perspective) flash point values and is applied to more volatile and flammable liquids (like fuels and solvents).

The flash point measurement result depends on the applied method; therefore, it is important to specify which method was used to obtain it.

Importance of the parameter for safety

Flash point is a crucial parameter from a safety perspective:

  • Product classification: It is used to classify liquids as flammable, highly flammable, or extremely flammable according to CLP regulations and transportation regulations (e.g., ADR).
  • Storage conditions: Determines requirements for the storage of lubricants and other chemicals (e.g., ventilation, distance from heat sources, explosive hazard zones).
  • Transportation conditions: Influences the transportation rules for hazardous substances.
  • Usage conditions: Warns about the risk of ignition during product use, e.g., near open flames, hot surfaces, or due to the discharge of electrostatic charges.

Example values

  • Gasoline: approx. -40°C (very flammable)
  • Diesel fuel: > 55°C
  • Most mineral motor oils: > 200°C
  • Most synthetic motor oils: > 220°C
  • Some organic solvents: Can have very low flash points, even below 0°C.
  • Aerosols: Many aerosol products contain flammable propellants and components with low flash points.

Special precautions

For products with a low flash point (e.g., below 60°C), specific precautions should be taken:

  • Store away from fire sources, sparks, and hot surfaces.
  • Ensure good ventilation to avoid vapor accumulation.
  • Avoid static electricity discharge possibilities during transfer.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Understanding the significance of flash points is essential for safely handling many chemical products, including lubricants and operational fluids.
