The oil and tire service Olgum from Kalisz is part of a nationwide network of workshops using Mobil Boxx – engine oils in a 20-liter plastic bag and cardboard packaging. What are the main advantages of this innovative and more sustainable packaging* and why is Mobil Boxx a proven concept that can be boldly recommended to other mechanics? You will learn about it from an interview with Grzegorz Przyszczypkowski, the founder of the service.
Olgum is known by hundreds of people in Kalisz. The list of regular customers and the wealth of experience are impressive.
Thank you. I have been running my own workshop for over 25 years, and I have been professionally involved with the automotive industry for even longer. I observe the growing popularity of Mobil 1 synthetic oils with low viscosity, but I still often use 10W-40 products. I order oils in barrels and also use Mobil Boxx packaging. Many of my clients combine seasonal tire changes with engine oil changes, which can be considered a reasonable approach to servicing.
You decided on Mobil Boxx as an alternative to traditional packaging. Is it easy to open up to changes after many years in the profession?
I like innovations and if an interesting product for workshops appears, I want to test it, even if it involves risk or disappointment. Additionally, the vision of an aesthetic shelf stocked with oils with a tap and ease of use was appealing to me. The 20-liter Mobil Boxx oils are more practical than smaller packages and fit well into the realization of sustainable development goals. Moreover, Mobil Boxx oil stands can be obtained for free as part of promotions organized by authorized Mobil oil distributors.
First impressions?
After experiencing Mobil Boxx, I find that using engine oils in traditional bottles daily – regardless of their capacity – is cumbersome because it requires more actions during an oil change. Mechanics are accustomed to traditional packaging, but transitioning to Mobil Boxx was a new experience for me and it showed how one can simplify everyday work in a simple way. Practicality and easy disposal are significant to me. Mobil Boxx packaging also takes up less storage space compared to 1L and 4L packages, and I don’t have to buy oils with less popular viscosities in barrels, as Mobil offers a wide range of Mobil Boxx products.
What else deserves attention from a mechanic’s perspective?
Quick disposal. After using the oil, I easily disassemble the Mobil Boxx packaging and sort the waste into plastic and paper. In addition, the stand for four or six Mobil Boxx packages doesn’t take up much space in the workshop. It’s a very aesthetically pleasing piece of equipment. If the attractive appearance of the workshop is to attract a customer, the stand with Mobil Boxx oils and dispensers will certainly help with that.
85% less plastic in Mobil Boxx compared to traditional 20L packaging. Do such environmental benefits matter to a mechanic or workshop client?
In my opinion, workshops’ awareness regarding reducing our industry’s impact on the environment is growing. 5 or 10 years ago, I didn’t receive as many questions about whether the workshop accepts used oil, which is evidence of drivers’ greater respect for the environment. It is, of course, in the interest of workshops and the environment to encourage drivers to have oil changes done at the service. Fewer waste is undoubtedly another strong point of Mobil Boxx.
How do customers react to Mobil Boxx?
The Mobil Boxx packaging arouses interest. Customers only knew barrels or plastic bottles, but they had never seen oil dispensed from a cardboard box with a tap. Today many drivers carefully count every penny for car servicing, and Mobil Boxx is an economical solution for both the workshop and the customer. The mechanic orders engine oil at a price lower than traditional plastic packages. In turn, the driver pays precisely for the amount of oil his engine needs and does not buy a product that he won’t use within a year for top-ups.
What story related to Mobil Boxx has remained in your memory?
A customer, intrigued by the new packaging, asked if he could see what’s inside. I opened the Mobil Boxx carton, took out the plastic bag with oil and said – this is what the original and hermetically sealed Mobil product looks like. I use the oil and easily dispose of the cardboard and plastic waste. We both agreed that Mobil Boxx is an interesting solution worth recommending to all my peers in the industry.
The current offer of Mobil Boxx oils available in Poland includes over 20 products meeting the demands of many vehicle manufacturers. Among the products available in 20L Mobil Boxx packaging, we find, among others, Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30, Mobil 1 FS 0W-40, Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, Mobil Super 3000 XE 5W-30, or Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W-40.
“The strengths of Mobil Boxx and openness to industry novelties caused Olgum to accept Mobipol’s invitation to the network of workshops using Mobil Boxx. The switch from 1L, 4L, and 5L plastic-packaged oils to Mobil Boxx is justified by convenience, financial and environmental aspects, and easy disposal and clear marking of packaging appeal to mechanics. According to a 2023 survey commissioned by Mobil oil’s producer, over 2/3 of mechanics rate the introduction of the Mobil Boxx concept as good or very good,” says Radosław Piękny, Mobipol, an authorized Mobil oil distributor.
