Engine Oils – Different Types and Purposes

Without proper engine oil, the engine will not be adequately protected, its lifespan will be shortened, and problems will arise during machine operation. How to choose engine oils to prevent this?

Why is engine oil so important?

To ensure smooth operation of a car, various types of oils are used. One of them is gear oils, used in gearboxes. It is important to realize that gear oil is also used in other components, including differentials. However, drivers pay most attention to choosing engine oil. Its main function is to reduce friction that occurs between individual engine parts. Without this substance, the vehicle will overheat. However, the role of engine oils does not end there.

Modern products, among other things, act anti-corrosively. Metal components are at risk of corrosion, and there is no shortage of metal parts in an engine. With the help of good oil, we can protect the camshaft and camshaft bearings from this process. It is important to realize that oil prevents dirt accumulation. Sometimes such accumulating dirt leads to various failures because the dirt hinders, among other things, the unimpeded axial and circular movement of the piston ring. In addition, oil also helps maintain optimal temperature inside the engine by cooling sliding bearings and pistons.

Types of engine oils

  • Synthetic engine oils

To create synthetic engine oil, synthetic base oils are used. They can be produced through various chemical reactions (e.g., chemical synthesis or crude refining). Synthetic engine oils provide excellent protection for engines under significant loads and during vehicle operation in winter. They help prevent starting problems even in very low temperatures. Fully synthetic products are effective even at -40 degrees Celsius. They are also economical solutions. The composition of the oil also helps maintain better thermal stability of the engine. It is mostly used in newer cars. One of the most popular solutions is Mobil engine oil.

  • Semi-synthetic oils

High-quality products often do not differ much in their properties from more expensive synthetic oils. Specialists recommend using such a solution for classic vehicles (mainly those from the 80s and 90s) and for cars with significant mileage (exceeding 300-400 thousand kilometers).

  • Mineral oils

The previously mentioned engine oils are most often purchased for passenger cars (although not only). In contrast, mineral engine oils are mainly chosen for trucks. Most specialists do not recommend using such a solution in passenger cars. Mineral oils have by far the worst parameters in terms of resistance to high temperature and operation at low temperatures. However, they are definitely the cheapest alternative.
