Challenges in the Paper Industry

Extreme operating conditions of circulation systems

The paper industry demands lubricants resistant to water, high temperatures, and chemicals. Papermaking machines operate continuously in a humid environment where each failure means production and financial losses.

Five critical issues in paper production:

Water contamination in circulation systems

Water contamination in circulation systems

Water from the production process enters the lubrication systems of papermaking machines. Water-oil emulsions do not lubricate properly, leading to accelerated wear on bearings and gears.

Oil degradation at high temperatures

Oil degradation at high temperatures

Drying sections and calendering generate extreme heat that degrades standard oils. Decomposition products form deposits that block filters and oil channels in the circulation systems of papermaking machines.

Rust and corrosion in a humid environment

Rust and corrosion in a humid environment

Continuous contact with steam and process chemicals attacks metal components. Corrosion of bearings and rolls leads to critical component failures in papermaking machines.

Decrease in energy efficiency

Decrease in energy efficiency

Improper oil selection increases friction in gears and bearings. Increased energy consumption and operating temperature reduce the overall plant efficiency.

Frequent maintenance downtime

Frequent maintenance downtime

Short lifespan of cheap oils necessitates frequent changes and cleaning of systems. Every machine downtime results in lost paper production and rising maintenance costs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • In the wet section, rapid water separation is key. Circulating oils from the MOBIL SHC PM or DTE PM series contain demulsifiers that ensure effective water-oil separation.

  • Synthetic oils offer longer life, better thermal stability, and potential energy savings. They are often more economical in high-temperature applications despite the higher price.

  • We recommend analyses every 3-6 months depending on working conditions. Monitoring allows the optimization of replacement intervals and prevents failures.

  • Many circulating oils are universal, but always check the manufacturer's requirements.

  • Viscosity depends on operating temperature, speed, and load. Typically ISO VG 150-220 is used for gears and ISO VG 46-100 for bearings.

  • If filters clog quickly, check the oil condition and water content. It may be necessary to clean the system and switch to oil with greater filterability.
